GLOBUS radelt 2022: A Cycling Fundraiser for the Ahr Valley

GLOBUS, a leading retailer, recently organised a cycling event named GLOBUS radelt 2022, with the aim of supporting the rebuilding and recovery efforts in the Ahr Valley, a region hit hard by devastating floods in 2021.

The Event

Over the course of a set period in 2022, participants cycled various distances, either individually or in groups, to raise awareness and collect donations. The event saw the involvement of GLOBUS employees, customers, and local community members who were motivated to contribute through sponsorship or direct donations.

The Impact

The funds raised were used to provide immediate relief and aid long-term rebuilding efforts in the flood-affected Ahr Valley. Beyond raising funds, the event also raised public awareness about climate-related disasters and the need for community-driven recovery initiatives.

The total distance cycled through GLOBUS radelt is used as a fundraising mechanism. So far, over 697,000 kilometers have been cycled, which is equivalent to more than 17 Earth circumferences. This year alone, an additional 225,000 kilometers have been added to the total. In fact, the total distance cycled is almost the distance to the moon and back.

The funds contributed to repairing homes, infrastructure, and local businesses damaged by the floods, accelerating recovery in the valley. The action remains a strong sign of the participants' heartfelt support for the rebuilding efforts in the Ahr valley.

Graciela Bruch, Chairwoman of the Globus Foundation, has explained the importance of the participants' dedication. She stated, "The cycling event is not just about physical activity, but also about lived solidarity. It demonstrates that sporting effort and social commitment go hand in hand."

The Globus Foundation, established 20 years ago, will celebrate its anniversary in 2025. The foundation donates one euro for every kilometer cycled, with the funds raised through GLOBUS radelt going to various projects in the Ahr valley.

The rebuilding of the Ahr valley is ongoing and requires continued support. Therefore, GLOBUS radelt has been carried out for the third time this year, and it is expected to become an annual event. The action serves as a meaningful fundraiser and community-building initiative that combines physical activity with philanthropy to support a critical cause in a region recovering from natural disaster impacts.

Science plays a crucial role in the recovery efforts of the Ahr Valley, as data collected from the cycling event contributes to the understanding of the environmental factors leading to disasters like floods.

The GLOBUS radelt event not only promotes health-and-wellness and fitness-and-exercise but also drives positive change in the community, aligning with the lifestyle of those supporting the Ahr Valley's rebuilding efforts.
