Couple's Health Plan Nightmare: Unwittingly Signs Up for Fake 'Job'

A New York couple has found themselves entangled in a surprising health insurance predicament, unknowingly signing up for a scheme that requires them to work a fake 'job'. This issue, brought to light by Bloomberg reporters Zachary Mider and Zeke Faux in their series 'Health Care Hustlers', is part of a larger problem affecting thousands of people.

The mastermind behind these deceptive health plans is a former TV sitcom writer turned investor, operating in a legal gray area that allows such schemes to proliferate. The couple, unaware of the hidden conditions, purchased the care credit plan from a telemarketer, only to later receive unexpected bills totaling thousands of dollars due to the plan's limitations. This left them unable to afford crucial medical care.

Dan Weissmann, host of 'An Arm and a Leg', discussed this issue with Mider and Faux in a webcast launched on August 13, 2025, as part of the 'KFF Health News' series. The webcast shed light on the couple's experience and the broader issue of people unknowingly agreeing to work fake 'jobs' to maintain their health coverage.

The couple's story serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the need for greater transparency and regulation in the health care industry. As the webcast and Bloomberg's investigation reveal, thousands may be affected by similar schemes, underscoring the urgency of this issue.
