Contaminated Meat Discovered at Oms's Butcher: Deadly Bacteria Present

Contaminated Poultry and Shashlik Identified in Omsk

Inspectors from the Omsk branch of the Rosselkhoznadzor have uncovered issues with local meat producers' products, as samples from an unscheduled inspection revealed the presence of listeria bacteria in chicken drumsticks and shashlik.

According to reports, the analysis of products from the "Svetofor" store network, conducted by the Federal Center for Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products (FGBU "TsOK APK"), revealed contamination. Specifically, chicken drumsticks from N.D. Sharikov's individual enterprise in Omsk, and "Classical" shashlik from LLC "Agrosnab Plus" in the same city, tested positive for the pathogenic bacterium.

Listeria poses a significant risk to certain population groups, including pregnant women, children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. This bacterium can proliferate even when stored at low temperatures, making it a concern for both consumers and producers.

Listeriosis, the illness caused by listeria, can manifest rapidly, with symptoms such as severe gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea appearing within a few hours of consuming contaminated products. In severe cases, the disease can be life-threatening, with a mortality rate of up to 20-30%.

To prevent further distribution of potentially harmful products, the agency has implemented appropriate measures. This action comes after a previous incident involving 3 tons of cherries contaminated with a dangerous parasite.

Given these findings, consumers are advised to take precautions when handling, preparing, cooking, and storing chicken products, especially if they fall under at-risk populations. A focus on cleanliness, thorough cooking, proper storage, and consultation with healthcare providers, if necessary, can significantly reduce the risk of foodborne illness.

Stay informed about local health alerts and advisories to keep abreast of food safety issues and potential Listeria outbreaks. If you suspect food contamination, contact local health authorities for guidance.

By adhering to these guidelines and staying informed, consumers can help ensure their safety when consuming chicken products.
