Children in Gaza, lined up anxiously, face the imminent threat of hunger as food distribution waittimes lengthen significantly.

In Gaza, a worsening humanitarian crisis leaves millions on the brink of famine. As of Tuesday, children could be seen lined up along roadsides, waiting for food from local community kitchens. According to the World Food Programme, two million people in the Gaza Strip are at risk of extreme hunger and famine if no immediate action is taken.

A verified video recorded the heartbreaking scene of children among the waiting crowd. One child was scalded by hot soup, followed by another video showing a child scooping up contaminated flour from the ground.

UNICEF emphasized the urgent need to protect Gaza's children, stating they require food, water, medicine, and a ceasefire. Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour, addressing a U.N. Security Council meeting, expressed the dire situation, with over 1,300 Palestinian children killed and 4,000 injured since March, when the ceasefire ended.

Mansour pointed out that dozens of children are currently starving to death in Gaza and called for immediate, collective action to address this crisis. He stated that the situation "exceeds the ability of any normal human being to tolerate."

The ongoing Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid entering Gaza has intensified the crisis, leading to widespread malnutrition and conditions that could potentially lead to famine. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification platform, 500,000 people in Gaza are at risk of starvation, with nearly 71,000 children needing treatment for acute malnutrition.

Some context: The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and displacement, with at least 53,655 Palestinians reportedly killed in Gaza between 7 October 2023 and 21 May 2025. The conflict has also severely affected health facilities, with more than 686 health attacks in the Gaza Strip, impacting 122 health facilities.

The extended blockade on food entry and aid distribution has exacerbated the situation in Gaza. Humanitarian groups and the United Nations have distanced themselves from the new aid distribution plan due to concerns over its effectiveness and potential politicization.

Last week, more than a dozen World Food Programme trucks were looted in southern Gaza while being transported to WFP-supported bakeries. This looting has contributed to rising insecurity and anxiety as people wait for assistance.

As the crisis unfolds, medical professionals like Dr. Feroze Sidhwa are expressing their concerns. Sidhwa, who has volunteered in Gaza, referred to witnessing the most extreme casualty event of his career during the conflict that broke the ceasefire in March. He also criticized the controversial aid distribution plan for its potential weaponization and politicization of aid supplies.
