Children Exposed to Testosterone Gel: 'Micropenis' and Genital Changes Reported

A Swedish pediatric endocrinologist has raised alarm after seeing multiple cases of young children exposed to hormone medication through close contact with a parent using testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). The children experienced dramatic changes in their genitalia, with one baby girl developing a 'micropenis' and another's clitoris elongating and labia fusing to resemble male genitalia.

The rise in popularity of TRT, often endorsed by high-profile individuals, has led to increased use of the hormone medication. TRT comes in various forms, including gels, which can accidentally expose others, especially children, through skin-to-skin contact. The Mayo Clinic advises thorough hand washing and rinsing of the treated area to prevent such exposure.

In one case, a baby girl's condition improved after her father stopped using the testosterone gel. However, another baby girl's parents noticed changes in her genitalia at 10 months old, leading them to seek medical help. The father in this case had overcome his alcoholism, but the impact on his relationship with his child was not detailed.

Exposure to hormone medication through close contact with a parent using TRT can have severe consequences for children. Medical professionals urge caution in handling TRT, especially gels, to prevent accidental exposure. If you or someone you know is using TRT, follow safety guidelines to protect others, particularly children.
