Headline: 10-Year-Old Boy Suffers Serious Injuries in Electric Scooter Accident in Moscow

In the heart of Moscow's city center, along Bolshaya Pirogovsky Street, a tragic incident occurred on August 13. A 10-year-old boy was involved in a head-on collision with another electric scooter rider, resulting in serious injuries.

According to eyewitness accounts, the boy was riding his personal e-scooter in a pedestrian zone, a clear violation of the city's regulations. The other rider, estimated to be 25-30 years old, was on a shared e-scooter. The collision occurred when the boy steered his scooter in the same direction as the other rider at the last moment.

The boy was thrown over the handlebars, hit his head on the asphalt, and lost consciousness. He was hospitalized with a brain contusion and hematomas. E-scooter rentals are officially prohibited for those under 18 in Moscow, and it is not recommended for children under 16 to ride e-scooters.

The number of accidents involving e-scooters in Moscow has decreased by 54.9% over seven months, with 3 fatalities and 462 injuries reported. However, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with e-scooters.

Alexander Sauntenko, a traumatologist from the Institute of Surgery at Pirogov University, emphasizes the importance of using protective gear, including a helmet, elbow and knee pads, special gloves, and shoes while riding an e-scooter. If a fall cannot be avoided, it's important to immediately assess the nature of the injury and treat superficial wounds with an antiseptic like chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine. For deeper wounds, a sterile gauze should be applied to prevent infection, and medical attention should be sought.

To ensure safety and prevent injuries, riders are advised to wear protective gear such as helmets, elbow and knee pads, gloves, and closed-toe shoes with good grip. Riders should also check their scooter before riding, follow traffic laws, ride defensively, and avoid risky behaviors like riding under the influence, in poor weather, or carrying passengers. Visibility measures and situational awareness are also critical.

An investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy is currently underway.
