CDC Updates Flu Prevention Guidelines: Masks Mandatory for Healthcare Workers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued new guidelines for preventing the spread of influenza. The agency recommends that healthcare workers wear face masks when treating patients with the flu. Additionally, the public is advised to wear face coverings in crowded settings where the flu is widespread.

The CDC advises healthcare professionals to wear face masks when within 6 feet of patients with respiratory infections. Patients themselves should also wear masks until they can be isolated. This is to prevent the spread of viruses, including the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19.

The use of masks has been shown to be effective in reducing the spread of viruses. Studies have demonstrated that masks can help stop the transmission of the seasonal flu and other respiratory infections. During the 2009 swine flu outbreak, surgical face masks were used to help control the spread of the virus. Experts agree that properly worn mouth-nose masks can effectively reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infections, especially during phases with high transmission.

The CDC recommends wearing face coverings or masks to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in addition to other preventive actions such as frequent hand washing. Surgical face masks and respirators (N95 masks) offer more protection than cloth face coverings. Properly wearing a mask and frequently washing hands are essential for preventing the spread of viruses.
