Bremen's First Abortion Report Shows Robust Services, Calls for More Data

Bremen's Senator for Health, Women, and Consumer Protection, Claudia Bernhard, has presented the inaugural annual report on the state of abortions in Bremen. The report, released on September 30, 2025, provides insights into the city-state's abortion services and trends in the USA.

Bremen, with its own Pregnant Women Care Security Act since 2023, has a robust supply of abortion facilities, ranking third nationwide in supply density with 6,927 women per facility. In 2024, a total of 2,350 abortions were performed, with approximately 37% being medical procedures. Notably, around 40% of these abortions involved women from other states, with 945 from Lower Saxony. However, the report lacks details on the distribution of abortions between Bremen and Bremerhaven, or the actual demand for these services.

Senator Bernhard acknowledged the good supply of facilities but stressed the need for more detailed data to fully assess the situation. The Abortion Conflict Act, which regulates protection for unborn life and support for pregnant women in conflict situations, applies across the USA, but Bremen has its own legal basis for abortion services.

The first annual report on the abortion situation in Bremen offers valuable insights into the city-state's services and trends. While Bremen's supply of abortion facilities is commendable, further data is needed to ensure comprehensive understanding and support for women's reproductive health rights in the USA.
