A fire broke out at a pellet factory in the Cercal do Alentejo Industrial Zone on July 21, spreading to the exterior and causing a wildfire. The fire was brought under control on July 31, following an explosion in a silo.

The smoke emission from the factory fire was eliminated in less than 48 hours, according to the health authority. However, the Alentejo coast health authority has not received any reports of illness related to respiratory problems due to this fire, but rather concerns.

The health authority visited the site on July 31 and developed an intervention response, working with other entities and the company. They are monitoring the situation and have not reported any public health situation as of now.

The technical sheet indicates that the material burning consisted only of wood and no additional chemical compounds. According to the mayor, if there was a public health problem, the authority would have acted differently.

The "Together for Cercal" movement, a local group expressing solidarity with the residents of Cercal do Alentejo, has called for the immediate suspension of the industrial project in its current conditions. They have also demanded an independent and public health and environmental impact study.

The mayor acknowledged the concern of those who might be feeling the effects of the fire's smoke. He also emphasised the importance of public participation in decisions that affect the territory.

While there is limited publicly available detailed medical data specific to the long-term health effects experienced by residents of Cercal do Alentejo following the pellet factory fire, exposure to smoke and particulate matter from industrial fires can lead to respiratory issues. These may include coughing, asthma exacerbations, bronchitis, and other lung-related conditions.

If there is ongoing concern about respiratory health in the community, local health surveillance, air quality monitoring, and sometimes medical screening or follow-up studies may be conducted to assess any lasting impacts.

For the most precise and up-to-date information, contacting regional health departments or environmental agencies in the Alentejo region would be advisable, as they might have conducted follow-up investigations or issued health advisories related to the pellet factory fire.

Some emails expressing concern about the duration of the fire and blaming the responsible entities for not acting have been sent. The movement continues to voice their discontent and stand in solidarity with the residents of Cercal do Alentejo village.

The health authority has expressed concern about potential mental health issues in the community, given the prolonged uncertainty caused by the pellet factory fire. In light of the ongoing environmental-science study, the importance of accurate data on long-term health effects related to science, health-and-wellness, and mental-health remains paramount.
