Bihar Update: Demand for Kidney Donation as Dowry Surfaces in Muzaffarpur
Patna Predicament: In a shocking turn of events, a woman from Bihar was urged by her in-laws to dispose of one of her kidneys if she couldn't produce a bike, cash, and jewels as dowry. This unsettling ordeal unfolded in Muzaffarpur, North Bihar, with the enraged wife, Dipti, lodging a complaint with the Women Police station.
Describing her plight to the authorities, Dipti revealed that she got hitched in 2021, and her in-laws' residence was situated under Bochaha police station in Muzaffarpur. She disclosed an initial period of tranquility after her wedding, but troubles emerged as her in-laws started mentally torturing her and physically assaulting her, demanding a bike and cash from her parents' house.
When she couldn't comply, her in-laws resorted to an unprecedented demand—forcing her to donate a kidney to her ailing husband. Startled by their audacity, Dipti initially believed it was a casual remark, but the tension escalated as her in-laws subjected her to unrelenting pressure.
Refusing to yield, Dipti was met with beatings and eventually evicted from her in-laws' home. Seeking solace in her parents' house, she filed a complaint with the Women Police station. The authorities attempted to mediate, but their efforts were futile. Dipti even requested a divorce, but her husband refused to oblige. Subsequently, a case 38/25 was registered at the Women Police station, implicating four members of her in-laws' family, including her husband.
Vidyasagar, the SP (Rural), confirmed an investigation into this matter initiated following the complaint filed at the Women Police station. This incident spotlights the enduring issue of dowry harassment in India, generating widespread disapproval and calls for stronger enforcement of anti-dowry laws.
