Berlin's Exit from the 2029 Women's Euro Race: Senate Administration Raises Eyebrows at UEFA's Demands
Berlin Firmly Rejects Any Risks for Hosting the 2029 European Championship - Berlin Adopts Cautious Approach in Current Scenario
Looks like Berlin's out of the running for the 2029 Women's Football European Championship, and the Berlin Senate Administration isn't mincing words about the UEFA's requirements. According to their spokesperson, Sabine Beikler, the city ain't keen on taking on unnecessary financial and contractual risks as part of the bidding process.
Prior to this announcement, the German Football Association (DFB) had revealed that the capital, with the iconic Olympic Stadium, wouldn't be part of Germany's bid for the next Women's Euro. Alongside Berlin, Gelsenkirchen and Rostock were booted off the list.
Cutting Berlin from the roster
The DFB, however, is still pushing forward with offers from Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hannover, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, and Wolfsburg. A panel of experts has given these cities the thumbs up, apparently because the UEFA's tournament regulations now demand that host cities should take on potential liabilities.
Holed up in the Interior and Sports Senate Department, they're wishing the remaining hopefuls the best of luck in their future endeavors. Berlin, they assert, will remain a strong supporter of women's football and sports promotion at all levels.
The UEFA is due to make its decision in December. Italy, Poland, and Portugal, as well as Denmark and Sweden betting on a joint candidacy, are Germany's main competitors. Berlin featured prominently as one of the main host cities for the Men's Euro 2024, with the final between Spain and England (2:1) played out there.
