Belfast Trust Scraps Neurology Compensation Scheme, Opting for Individual Assessments

The Belfast Trust has announced that it will not implement a neurology compensation scheme. Instead, each case will be individually assessed for a fair resolution. Patients have until 21 June 2026 to submit claims for compensation.

The Neurology Recall was launched due to concerns about the treatment provided by former consultant neurologist Michael Watt. It involved three groups of patients: those currently under Watt's care, those discharged, and those prescribed specific medications between 2020 and 2020.

The reports for Cohort 1, 2, and 3 were published in December 2019, April 2021, and April 2023, respectively, with an addendum for Cohort 3 also published in April 2023. Claims should be submitted under standard health service litigation claims, with a streamlined approach used where appropriate.

The Belfast Health & Social Care Trust Neurological Care Advisory Service is available to support patients. It can be contacted on 02895042270 or via email at [email protected]. Patients have until 21 June 2026 to issue proceedings for a claim against the Belfast Trust.
