Alexandria Hosts 8-Hour Mental Health Training for Adults on Oct 15
Alexandria is set to host an eight-hour mental health training session for adults on October 15, 2023. The event, organized by the city, aims to equip participants with essential skills to support youth dealing with mental health and substance abuse challenges.
The training, held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 4850 Mark Center Drive, is open to various caring residents such as parents, teachers, and health workers. It is a response to the alarming statistic that one in six youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year in the U.S., according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
The session will cover identifying warning signs, symptoms, effects, and treatment options for mental health and substance abuse disorders. This aligns with the city's existing Youth Mental Health First Aid course, which focuses on supporting adolescents facing these challenges. The training is the brainchild of Dr. Temi O. Aregbesola MPH, Ph.D, who has requested future training in youth psychophysical first aid. While the specific providers for these future sessions are not named, they will be qualified professionals or institutions designated by Dr. Aregbesola.
Registration is required to attend the October 15 session. By participating, residents can gain valuable knowledge and skills to better support the mental health of Alexandria's youth.
