"The Boys" Star Erin Moriarty Opens Up About Living With Graves' Disease

Gang of Misbehaving Superheroes Causes Chaos - Actor from "The Boys" discloses diagnosis to followers.

Erin Moriarty, known for her role in "The Boys," has opened up about living with an autoimmune disease - Graves' disease, also called Basedow's disease. This condition affects the thyroid gland, often causing it to swell.

On Instagram, Moriarty, at the age of 30, revealed her diagnosis and shared her experience, "If I hadn't blamed everything on stress and fatigue, I would've noticed it sooner. I was diagnosed with Graves' disease a month ago."

She reminded her followers that everyone with autoimmune diseases might exhibit different symptoms, but her symptoms included feeling drained and attributing it to stress and fatigue before her diagnosis. However, she shared a glimmer of hope: "Within 24 hours of starting treatment, I felt my strength returning. Since then, I’ve been feeling better and better."

Moriarty urged her fans to prioritize their health, "Don't just bear the pain and endure the suffering; you deserve to feel well. Life is tough enough as it is."

A Desperate Plea to Her Mother

Along with a series of selfies mirroring her journey from exhaustion to vibrancy, Moriarty posted a screenshot of a conversation with her mother. "I'm really serious; I need help," she wrote. "I feel terrible tonight. I feel so detached from myself that I can’t continue living like this."

Later, she texted her father stating, "I feel so much better after starting treatment. I've been missing out on this good feeling!"

The Fourth Season of "The Boys" Arrives

Understanding Graves' Disease

Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition, triggers hyperthyroidism, resulting in an overactive thyroid. It may cause symptoms like:

  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Hand tremors
  • Skin discoloration [1]

Treatment typically involves:

  • Radioactive iodine therapy
  • Antithyroid medications
  • Surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland
  • Beta blockers to manage symptoms like tremors and palpitations

Incorporating these treatments helps reduce thyroid hormone production to normal levels or alleviate symptoms effectively. Moriarty's statement suggests that proper management of Graves' disease can lead to improved quality of life.
